Post MBBS Left India in 1974 and worked in Aberdeen and Northampton UK till July 1977. Moved to New York in July 1977 where I joined Misericordia Hospital as a Resident in Internal Medicine.

After completing Fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology,I became an Instructor in Medicine in Tennessee. Following this I worked as an Assistant and Associate Professor between 1983 to 1995.

In 1995, I was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami and then moved to University of Pennsylvania as Professor of Medicine and Surgery in October 2001.

Present Ruimy Family President’s Distinguished  Professor of Medicine ( about 1 % of Professors at the University of Pennsylvania have an Endowed Chair), Professor of Medicine in Surgery in the Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology at the University of Pennsylvania ( top 5 Medical Schools in the US) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

  • Served on the American Board of Internal Medicine in Gastroenterology for six years (as the only Indian thus far)
  • Councilor-at-large  of the American Association of the Study of Liver Diseases ( 2 nd Indian to be on the Governing Board )

  • Current research interests include areas of advanced liver disease, liver transplantation, viral hepatitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Papers Authored or co-authored over 400 peer-reviewed papers on a spectrum of hepatobiliary topics that include liver transplantation, chronic C viral hepatitis, HIV and the liver, and hepatocellular carcinoma. H citation index of publications is 82 (Top 3 % of Investigators in the World in this discipline with over 33,000 published paper citations)
